Happy Go Lucky

When: November 25, 2023

Where: Paris Theater — in line for Maestro

I couldn’t believe the line for the movie Maestro. I was certainly going to see this movie and I was going to see it at an art house theater in NYC, of course. The Paris Theater is right in the neighborhood where Leonard Bernstein lived — even better! I wasn’t the only one with this idea. All of us had our tickets in advance and all of us were in line waiting to be let in.

Of course, there were three people ahead of me in line gabbing away. I was on my own so, of course, I was eavesdropping.

The man at one point said, “I am happy, but not so lucky.” One of the women he was with said, “What made you say that?” He answered, “I was just thinking about being happy go lucky, and I can say I am happy, but not so lucky.”

The other women in the group said, “And if you are lucky, you would definitely be happy.”

It got me thinking — what does “happy go lucky” mean anyway? What does it mean to you? Are you both happy and lucky? Does happiness lead to luckiness?

As you are happy so you’ll be lucky?

The three of them went on and on thinking about happiness and luckiness and the connection between the two. For my part, happiness allows you to open up to being lucky.

“Cheerfully unconcerned about the future” is the actual definition of the saying. In that way, I think people are happy who are not concerned about what the future brings them. That in and of itself is quite a lucky state to be in.

With the way the world is, I believe Madame NYC seeks for us to be happy go lucky. Concern yourself with the present moment you are in and let the future take care of itself.

Indeed! A good thought to begin 2024!
